Buying a used motorcycle is a great way to save money...as long as the model isn't riddled with issues that will cost a fortune to fix. Use the following tips to find a quality model that won't end up draining your budget down the road.

Ask Questions

The more you know about the used motorcycle's past, the easier it will be to estimate its future longevity.

For example, why did the previous owner decide to sell? Did they simply want a different type of motorcycle? Or did they experience issues with the model, such as difficult handling or constant breakdowns, that might plague you as well?

Look Over the Maintenance Records

Ask for a copy of the maintenance reports.

First, see if the previous owner kept up with preventative maintenance. If they failed to do so, the used motorcycle might be due for expensive parts replacements and repairs soon.

Second, see if there are records of previous accidents. If so, make sure the used motorcycle has the necessary repairs already taken care of.

Inspect the Used Motorcycle

Conduct a thorough inspection to ensure the various parts and systems are in good working order. Look over everything from the tire tread to the fuel tank. If the previous owner installed any aftermarket accessories, check that they were installed correctly.
