If you have never regularly ridden a motorcycle before, you should be prepared to learn a lot in your first few months of ownership. As a first-time motorcycle owner, there are some tips about riding style and safety that you want to practice as soon as possible. Visit American Marine & Motorsports in Shawano, Wisconsin, and our team will be able to share more safety and riding tips. We welcome customers from Appleton and Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Look Where You Want to Go

When a lot of motorcycle riders first begin riding, they have a problem with target fixation. Remember that if you look where you want to go, you will end up going in that direction. Look at a point far ahead of you, instead of very close in front of your bike.

Keep Your Heels In

Keeping your heels in towards the motorcycle will provide you with more stability. If your posture becomes too loose, you can have issues controlling the bike properly. Use the pegs on the bike, and press your heel close to the plate of the motorcycle body.

Adjust Your Mirrors

Before setting off, adjust all your mirrors. You might need to use a tool to position the mirrors into a useful position. Do not wait until you are on the road because that can be dangerous. Make sure you are sitting on the bike as you would be while riding.

Assume You Are Invisible

Many people driving around on the roads do not pay attention to motorcycle riders the same way they pay attention to cars and trucks. Assume that you are relatively invisible to other people on the road, and make sure you are alert at all times. You never know when you will need to make an evasive maneuver to avoid an oncoming car due to a distracted driver.

Do Not Brake During a Turn

One of the biggest mistakes a first-time rider can make on a motorcycle is applying the brake during a turn. You will end up in a nasty accident if you hit the brakes before reaching the apex of a turn. Try gently accelerating through your turns. This method will keep you from flying over the handlebars into the asphalt.
